The Frost Symphony Orchestra performs three seminal American compositions. David Diamond and Aaron Copland, two 20th-century American musical giants, highlight this program. Diamond, known for his eleven symphonies, mentored notable composers like Adolphus Hailstork, Lowell Liebermann, and Eric Whitacre. Copland's Appalachian Spring, originally a ballet for Martha Graham, epitomizes Americana. Additionally, Czech composer Antonín Dvořák, who led the National Conservatory of Music of America in 1892, composed his renowned "New World Symphony" in 1893, featuring the iconic English horn solo in the second movement, which evolved into the spiritual "Going Home."
