Spanish composer Manuel de Falla's celebrated ballet, The Three-Cornered Hat, remains a favorite since its premiere. Gerard Schwarz has crafted an orchestral suite from it, to be performed by the Frost Symphony Orchestra.
In celebration of the Frost School of Music’s centennial, Frost professor Etienne Charles writes a new work for the orchestra. Having recently had one of his compositions premiere at the opening concert of the newly renovated David Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center, you will not want to miss it! The concert concludes with Gustav Mahler’s "Totenfeier," which later became part of his Second Symphony.

AMERICANA | Frost Symphony Orchestra
The Frost Symphony Orchestra performs three seminal American compositions. David Diamond and Aaron Copland, two 20th-century American musical giants, highlight this program. Diamond, known for his eleven symphonies, mentored notable composers like Adolphus Hailstork, Lowell Liebermann, and Eric Whitacre. Copland's Appalachian Spring, originally a ballet for Martha Graham, epitomizes Americana. Additionally, Czech composer Antonín Dvořák, who led the National Conservatory of Music of America in 1892, composed his renowned "New World Symphony" in 1893, featuring the iconic English horn solo in the second movement, which evolved into the spiritual "Going Home."

Coming from a dynasty of revered classical musicians, cellist Julian Schwarz will grace the stage with his father and Music Director, Gerard Schwarz, performing one of the greatest cello concertos of all time composed by Dvořák. The program builds to the ultimate Pictures at an Exhibition by Mussorgsky that was later orchestrated by Ravel, a symphonic homage and musical depiction of Mussorgsky’s dear friend Victor Hartmann’s artwork.
